Replication in the largest biology dictionary online. Free learning resources for students covering all major areas of biology. Definition noun (1) (genetics) The process of duplicating or producing an exact copy of a polynucleotide strand such as DNA. The term “replication” refers first and foremost to copying, and genes are the self-replicating molecules of biology. Some critics (e.g., Lewontin 1991: 48) interpreted this to mean that a strand of DNA placed on a glass slide might start replicating all on its own. After replication, each DNA has one parental or “old” strand, and one daughter or “new” strand.

Meselson and DNA replication generally occurs by a bidirectional mechanism in which two replication forks form at an origin and move in opposite directions, with both template strands being copied at each fork. Synthesis of eukaryotic DNA in vivo is regulated by controlling the activity of the MCM helicases that initiate DNA replication at multiple origins spaced along chromosomal DNA. Replication always starts at specific locations on the DNA, which are called origins of replication and are recognized by their sequence.
